MAINTENANCE

Maintaining your emergency lighting units is extremely important. You need to ensure that the entire units are actually working. As well as checking that the back-up battery is capable to last the full duration required by the standards.

The “responsible person” of a business or organisation is required to ensure periodic checks are carried out. This servicing also needs to be documented in a fire safety log book.

Abatis provides a comprehensive emergency lighting service package tailored to your requirements. We provide not just the annual tests, but we can also act as your responsible person. This involves carrying out the monthly testing on your behalf, taking away the headache and responsibility of ensuring your system is in full working order.

Duration of Emergency Lighting

When installing a new emergency lighting system, first you need to assess the time require to evacuate the premises. Which depends entirely upon the size and complexity of the building. The minimum duration of escape system emergency lighting is 1 hour, if the premises is likely to be evacuated immediately after a power failure.

For residential properties, or areas where evacuation is not instant (such as accommodation), the emergency lighting system should last for at least 3 hours.

If you are unsure as to the level of emergency lighting that you require, please contact the team at Abatis today. The BS 5266 guide also contains detailed information on this.
